An Open Letter requesting a San Antonio Committee against Proselytizing
I would like to address a growing awareness and concern about "proselytizing,"

... the practice of promoting, or soliciting converts to, the proselytizer's religion.

In our home state of Texas, this is a growing threat to Americans' freedoms as enumerated in the Constitution and Bill of Rights Amendment.  Recently, the First Amendment has been upheld by the Federal District court here (Western District of Texas, San Antonio Division) in the Medina Valley Independent School District case. The School District's administration, teachers and personnel, were promoting their Christian faith and belief upon a "captive" body of students.   The First Amendment protects any and all U.S. citizens from "Congress ... establishment of, or prohibiting ... of (religion)."

U.S. Supreme Court rulings since, have upheld that no State or local government can violate the First Amendment. However, the Republican Party of Texas platform, and incumbent (Republican) candidates who hold public office in Texas today, make a very clear declaration and "official" representation of their Christian “proselytizing.”

Now, in news story after news story, we learn about "bullying" of victims, and sometimes in public places, but, all too often, the underlying or even predominating "bullies" in our Texas communities are these very same Christian "public officials."

For these reasons, I am renouncing my Christian faith, and pursuing agnostic theology. I now request that we consider forming some committee to focus on and address "proselytizing" by the government and government officials, and further that the committee address how "proselytizing" might impact childhood development and even possible tragic consequences.

Thank you, Rhett R. Smith

Platform

I am for open and fair elections and believe that the current two party system falls short of this goal.  I believe that both the Democrat and Republican parties have failed to address crucial issues.  To correct this deficiency in our system, I have filed Smith v. Iowa #SA07CA0668XR and Smith v. New Hampshire # SA07CA0982OG, for legal remedy.

Additionally, I believe the current political "setup" fails to address issues such as the Interfaith Religious Issues and Muslim and Palestinian issues in the Holy Land.  These issues profoundly influence our politics and military mission, but are excluded from public debate and involvement.  This needs to change.

I support the rights of Latin American Citizens and oppose invasive and illegal searches.  I support local LULAC activities especially that of the Civil Rights focused LULAC Zapatistas.  I am a Co-Founder of Veterans for Immigration Reform and as a Public Access Producer, work to educate the public on this issue in my program, "Rhett Smith's America," which airs on Time Warner, Grande Communications, and AT&T Uverse.

I promise to address issues prejudicial against Native American Indians, and currently work with the Texas Indigenous Council Headquartered in San Antonio.

As an elected officer in the Texas Green Party, I will be proactive in addressing Ecological issues.

Finally, I stand firm in Opposing Forced Medication through the public Water Systems, a failed public policy that endangers all humans especially minority children (Click here - LULAC Resolution OPPOSING Water Fluoridation).
